Longing for a slower pace?
Smallwood State Park is your
place. Once the home of Maryland’s
fourth governor, this 628-acre wooded
retreat welcomes campers, hikers,
history buffs, and anyone who could
use a deep breath of fresh air.
Start your visit with a peaceful hike through
hardwood forests and tidal wetlands, and don’t miss
the scenic bridge that connects the campground to
Sweden Point Marina—it’s a favorite photo spot.
Try your luck at bass 昀椀shing from the docks, grab
a cold drink at The General’s Store, or head to the
Discovery Center to see live animal exhibits and
watch birds from the observation deck. Families will
昀椀nd plenty of space to play—the park offers two
playgrounds with swings, slides, and climbing walls.
Step back in time at the restored 18th-century
house and 19th-century tobacco barn. Guided tours
provide visitors a window into the life of William
Smallwood, who served under George Washington
before becoming Maryland’s fourth governor.
If your ideal evening involves a camp昀椀re and the
sound of crickets instead of traf昀椀c, you’re in luck!
Choose from 18 campsites, each equipped with
at least a window air-conditioning unit, or settle
into one of the campground’s cabins. Two modern
cabins feature full HVAC systems and include added
comforts such as a microwave, mini refrigerator, and
coffee maker, while the remaining rustic cabins offer
a cozy retreat in nature. After a day spent outside,
the nearby bathhouses offer the comfort every
camper looks forward to: a long, hot shower.
