at Port Tobacco
Historic Village
Long before colonial settlers arrived,
the land along the Port Tobacco
River belonged to the Potapoco and
Piscataway tribes. By 1727, the village
of Port Tobacco was established,
eventually becoming Maryland’s
second-largest port in the mid-1700s.
Ongoing archaeological research
sheds light on a village that once was
home to over 80 buildings—including
a courthouse, church, merchant
stores, and even a brewery. Imagine
a community alive with shoemakers,
weavers, milliners, and postmasters,
all shaping the rhythm of daily life
along the river.
Today, Historic Port Tobacco consists
of three carefully preserved structures
that offer a unique look into the life of
Charles County residents at the height
of the tobacco industry.
